As the school year progresses for my children, the number of performances, concerts and practices requiring my supportive attendance also increases.
As the date for my licensure exam rapidly approaches, so does my test taking anxiety and pressure to perform well.
As the holidays draw near, my desire to connect with friends and family also increases.
Each passing day seems to bring more items to my To-Do list, more than can be adequately accomplished within my 24-hour day, 7-day week, or 52-week year. How can I possibly take time out for myself when I cannot even get done with what is important for today?
Although it may sound clique, there is wisdom in this quote made by Carl Bryan, tennis coach:
"Taking good care of YOU, means the people in your life will receive the best of you rather than what's left of you."
Adequate self-care is vitally important for ALL people. While its importance is highlighted for those in mental health professions , it is a subject that needs more attention within the general population. There is not one person who would not benefit from proper levels of self-care. I realize that the entitlement of self-care can be taken to a selfish level, but I am not encouraging selfishness, rather proper levels of self-care will serve to replenish and restore a person's tank from which others will be able to draw.
What does self-care look like?
- Taking time to relax.
- Listening to music.
- Reading a book purely for enjoyment.
- Taking your dog for a walk.
- Taking a warm bubble bath with lit candles.
- Practicing yoga/meditation techniques.
- Baking cookies.
- Going out to eat with a special friend.
- Painting, sewing, or wood-working.

Finally, self care will look differently for each person, find what is relaxing to you and take the time to do it. Make it a priority. YOU, and those around you, will reap the benefits!
